Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix on Acer Aspire One

I decided to give the latest version of Ubuntu Remix a shot on my AOA150. My results have been great so far.

From Zen and the Acer Aspire One

You can download the ISO and installation instructions here Ubunto 9.10 Netbook Remix

In my case I already had Windows 7 installed and I wanted to do a dual boot scenario. So prior to installation I went to Disk Management under manage computer to resize the Windows 7 partition. I shrank the primary partition 48 Gb to allow that space for the Ubuntu installation. You can choose what ever size you want withing allowable limits of your Disk. After resizing I rebooted and started the installation as per the instructions about for a USB disk installation.

Bammm... the installation went smoothly without a hiccup. And much to my surprise everything worked, right out of the box so to speak. Video, Sound, Wireless, Bluetooth, and Camera were right there. I was pleased.

The only problem I did encounter was the netbook would not go into sleep mode. A little research on the Ubuntu forums found a couple possible solutions. I upgraded the Bios as per the Acer support documentation, but no joy. A little more reading pointed me to SDHC card mounted in the left hand slot. I normally keep a 8GB SDHC card there. After removing that, well that did it. Now I can normally suspend the netbook by closing the display or selecting the suspend option via the menus.

The dual boot option was easy during install as the Ubuntu install detected the disk arrangement and asked if I wanted to do a side by side installation. I selected that, and ran the rest of the install by choosing the defaults.

For anyone that might be hesitant to try Ubuntu on their Acer Aspire One, I would advise you not to worry. If your installation goes as trouble free as mine, and I see no reason why it should not, you too ... will be pleasantly surprised.

Acer Aspire One 532G LetsGoMobile:
"Last year, the netbook appeared to be at the beginning of a large breakthrough. A year later, the opposite seems to be the case. The notebooks have become smaller and have actually been taking over the place that the netbooks should have been filling."

Acer Aspire One 542G Ion 2 Netbook Hands-on | TheLinkExperts.co.uk:

Since nVidia’s Ion technology was released last year, we haven’t seen that many netbooks that have taken advantage of it. The Acer Aspire One 524G is the first Ion-based netbook we’ve seen in a little while, in fact, and was released at Mobile World Congress last week. To find out more about the Acer Aspire On 542G, and to see photographs of it in action, read on after the jump…

The Acer Aspire One 542G is a 10.1-inch netbook, and although the styling is more underwhelming than the Acer Aspire One 531, the fact it features nVidia’s Ion 2 technology makes it more appealing than a lot of its rivals."
